Gay Head light and clay cliffs in Aquinnah on the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard. The picturesque landscape photography image was taken on a late evening in October 2013. A long exposure setting blurred clouds in the sky and the shrubs thereby providing a dynamic feel of movement and the strong winds present at the time of picture taking. The lighthouse is best photographed in the evening; morning light should be spectacular as well. Polarizing filter and split neutral density filters will provide long exposure times for silky water effects, boost colors, minimize glare and balance the contrast between bright sky and darker foreground.
Gay Head Light was the first lighthouse build on Martha's Vineyard and in 1799 the light was turned on for the first time. The light was most likely a spider lamp of several wicks in a shallow circular pan filled sperm whale oil. The first appointed keeper was Ebenezer Skiff.
